East Riding of Yorkshire

Be it remembered that James Hudson of Yedingham [see note below] in the said Riding, Farmer's Servant and William Ruddock of New Malton in the North Riding of Yorkshire, Tradesman the 29th day of April in the Year of Our Lord one thousand eight hundred and nine came before me John Robinson Francis Esquire one of his Majesty's Justices of the Peace for the said Riding, and in their proper person acknowledged themselves to be indebted to our Sovereign Lord the King, in manner following, that is to say, the said James Hudson twenty pounds and the said William Ruddock twenty pounds to be made and levied on their land and tenements, gardens and chattels, respectively, to the use of the said Lord the King, his Heirs and Successors if default should be made in the condition following.

Whereas Hannah Ethell of Sledmere in the said East Riding single woman, hath, in and by her voluntary examination, taken in writing, on oath, before me one of his Majesty's Justices of the Peace for the said Riding, declared herself with child, and the said child is likely to be born a Bastard, and to be chargeable to the said township of Sledmere and that the above-bounden James Hudson is the Father of such child.

The condition, therefore, of the above Recognizance is such, That if the said James Hudson do and shall appear personally at the next General Quarter-Sessions of the Peace, to be holden in and for the said Riding, and abide by and perform such order or orders as shall be made in pursuance of an Act passed in the 18th year of the reign of Queen Elizabeth, concerning Bastards, begotten and born out of lawful matrimony, Recognizance to be void, otherwise of force.

Hannah Ethel is the 3rd child of Thomas Ethile (Ethel, or Ethell) and Deborah Rose.

29 April 1809 This recognizance, when Hannah is over 19 years of age.

27 August 1809 Mary Ethel (Hannah's daughter) is baptised at Rillington, N.Yorks

28 October 1810 Hannah marries James Hudson (named as Mary's father in the above recognizance) at

Rillington, N.Yorks.

The couple have 2 more children, surnamed Hudson.

Note: The summary of the document in the Online catalogue for the East Riding Archives states (with a question mark) that James Hudson was from Frodingham. My reading of the document is that it is Yedingham, and that this makes more sense in terms of the geography of the area. Yedingham is just down the road from Scampston. Hannah probably got pregnant there before she moved to Sledmere.
